Great Raman
One year when the summer was very bad the village did not get any rain for a long time. The villagers suffering from the heat and worried that their crops may die they
Prayed to Gods to send rain in his village.
One day an old sanyasi who traveling along the road visited Raman’s village it so happened that as soon as he walked into the village the dark clouds appeared and with crash of thunder it began to rain heavily all the people were very happy and they believed that the Gods had sent the sanyasi to bring them rain.
The villagers of Tenali dance around, surprised sanyasi shouting he is a truly holy man Raman saw what was happening and began to laugh because he had seen the dark clouds gathering much before the holy man stepped into the village.
The old sanyasi knew that Raman was right sanyasi realized that Raman is a very clever boy and he decided to pass on his knowledge to Raman he called Raman aside and said, Raman you are a very clever boy and one day you will be famous I will teach you a mantra that you should chant one thousand times in front of the Goddess Kali but make sure that you are alone inside the temple only then will the Goddess Kali appear and bless you with gifts.
Raman was excited and rushed to the Maha Kali temple making sure he was alone
He began to chant the mantra As soon as he had finished chanting one thousand times there was a flash of light and the Goddess Kali appeared in a cloud of smoke she had one thousand heads and held a spear in her hand.
At first Raman was shocked and bent down in fear but suddenly he began to laugh loudly Kali became angry and shouted at Raman why are you laughing at me boy?
Trying hard to control his laughter Raman says Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! I am sorry O’ Goddess Kali even though I have only one nose and I find it difficulty to wipe my nose when I have a cold I just imagined how difficult it would be for you to wipe your one thousand noses if you got a cold.
The Goddess Kali stopped frowning & smiled she admired the little boy’s wit and honesty looking at Raman she said you are a very witty boy since you have made me smile I will give you a gift saying this she waved her hand and with a flash of light two bowls of milk appeared in front of Raman he was seeing this wonderfully.
Smiling at Raman Goddess Kali said here are two bowls of milk one contains the milk of knowledge and other contains the milk of wealth choose a bowl and drink the milk you will be blessed with wealth or knowledge for the rest of your life tell me which bowl will you choose?
Raman looked at the bowls and thought a while & said O’ Goddess Kali how can I choose the bowl without tasting the milk to find out which one is better would you allow me to just taste the milk from each bowls before deciding.
Goddess Kali’s one thousand heads looked at one another then said to Raman ok go ahead and taste the milk from both bowls.
With a gleeful giggle Raman quickly picked up each bowl and took a two big mouths of milk from each as he finished he stood up and gave the Goddess a naughty smile.
Suddenly Goddess Kali realized that she had been tricked by Raman she became furious and said to Raman how dare you trick me Raman quickly asked her forgiveness and said forgive me O’ Goddess Kali but what is the use of knowledge without wealth I will be able to do a lot more good if I had both.
Once again the Goddess Kali realized that Raman was being honest and she forgave Raman she blessed him and in a flash of light she disappeared from that day on Tenali Raman began his adventures using wit and knowledge to bring him great wealth.
